PRENATAL MUSIC
Prenatal sounds are an important developmental component in prenatal life. They provide a foundation for later learning and behavior. With fetal sound stimulation, the brain functions at a higher level of organization.

Research increasingly shows us that when children are exposed to music at an early age their cognitive abilities (perception, learning, and reasoning) are likely to improve. An unborn baby seems able to learn a response to music. One of the simplest forms of learning is habituation, which is learning not to respond to the same repeated stimulus; and then reacting again to a new different stimulus. This indicates that the individual is initially responding to the specific stimulus, rather than the fact it is just there. A fetus played a certain type of music, responds to it initially but shows habituation on repetition. With a new sound, the fetus responds again.

It seems that this prenatal learning continues after birth. One study showed that one-week old babies preferred lullabies that had been sung to them while the mother was pregnant. The lullabies had a greater calming effect on the infants than unfamiliar songs. In a study of college students, it was found that undergraduates who had received music training before twelve years, did significantly better on verbal memory tests.

In another study, mothers reported that children who were played music in the womb showed more rapid development of behaviors such as facial imitation, gross and fine motor co-ordination (the ability to hold a bottle with both hands), eye- hand co-ordination, and linguistic development.

Prenatal stimulation is a process that encourages learning in unborn babies, optimizing mental and sensory development. The way parents interact with their babies even before they are born has an impact on the development of the child later in life. Communicating with the unborn child provides the stable, supportive environment that every child needs in order to learn and grow.
